A few days ago, a friend watched the Rocky Horror Picture Show for the first time, and this reminded me of just how much I love that film. So I thought I'd share it here, so that you too can jump on the bandwagon. I first watched the Rocky Horror when I was like 12, at a friend's house one afternoon after school : was it the right age to watch that film ? Most likely not. Did I love it ? Yes ! This iconic movie, and most of all its iconic soundtrack, became one of my staples. Later on I went to see the sing-a-long at the Studio Galande in Paris, loved it, dragged my friends along in first year when it was screened by a film club at uni, went to the show in Paris again with some other friends, and the soundtrack saved me through many a late night essay writing session in the library. In short, it is amazing and you need to watch it.
Now a bit of Rocky Horror history : it came out in 1975, a parody of science fiction and horror B movies, encountered an unimpressive success when it came out, but soon became a midnight movie, where fans came back every week to watch it, dress up as the characters, make jokes and ironic side comments and sing along. It then stirred up an international fan cult like following, that is still going strong today. You might know it from Fame, from Glee, or from The Perks of Being a Wallflower. You might not know it yet. Well it features aliens, glittery top hats, 10/10 songs, a pool, Meat Loaf on a motorcycle with a saxophone, a German doctor, and much, much more. It also features Susan Sarandon, who is also Louise in Thelma and Louise, and the March girls' mother in Little Women (two movies that should also be on your list if you haven't watched them yet), meaning that she has played an even more important role in my teenage years than I realised.
My point is, one of these upcoming winter nights get a few friends together and watch this beautifully absurd film. Alternatively find out if your city has a singalong show screening somewhere, and get a ticket - you won't regret it !
Sleep tight !
